Zostrix (Capsaicin) is an over-the-counter topical medication used to treat minor muscle and joint aches and pains caused by cramps, bruises, arthritis, sprains, and backache. Muscle and joint aches are often present with stiffness or weakness in the affected area, a rash, or fever. Zostrix is also used to treat nerve pain in people who have had herpes zoster. The active ingredient in Zostrix is Capsaicin. Capsaicin belongs to a class of drugs called topical analgesic agents. It works by causing a sensation of heat on the body to activate certain nerve cells. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in chili peppers that makes them hot. With regular use, the heating effect of Capsaicin reduces the amount of substance P, a chemical that acts as a pain messenger in the body.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Zostrix. The most common side effects of Zostrix may include the following:
• Burning sensation at application site

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Loss of feeling;
• Severe irritation at application site;
• Swallowing or breathing difficulties after accidental inhalation of capsaicin odor or dried residue

These are not all of the side effects of Zostrix. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.

You should not use Zostrix if you are allergic to Capsaicin or any ingredient in Zostrix. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or planning to be pregnant;
• Have open wound or severe skin infection

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Zostrix and other medicines, especially topical medications and transdermal patches for pain. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known if Zostrix will harm a fetus. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Do not apply Zostrix to your breast area if you are breastfeeding a baby. Use Zostrix precisely as prescribed by your doctor. This drug is a topical medicine. Do not take it by mouth. Do not use Zostrix on open wounds or sunburned, dry, or irritated skin. Make sure your skin is clean and dry before applying Zostrix. Wash your hands with soap and water immediately after applying this drug. If you are treating your hand or fingers, apply Zostrix and wait at least 30 minutes before washing your hands. Capsaicin may cause a burning sensation wherever it is applied, but the sensation should gradually lessen over time. If the sensation is painful or causes severe discomfort, wash the treated area with soap and cool water. Contact your doctor if severe burning, blistering, or swelling occurs. Avoid bathing, swimming, or vigorous exercise within 1 hour before or after applying Capsaicin. Warm water or perspiration can increase the burning sensation caused by Zostrix. Avoid getting Zostrix in your eyes or near your nose where you might inhale it. Inhaling Capsaicin may cause breathing difficulties. It may take up to two weeks of applying Zostrix regularly for your symptoms to improve. Pain relief should gradually occur as the substance P in your body decreases. Inform your doctor if your pain does not improve within 7 days or if your symptoms get worse or get better and then come back in a few days. Keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.
