Xyloproct (Lidocaine/Hydrocortisone Acetate) is a prescription medication used to relieve the pain and discomfort of hemorrhoids (piles). Hemorrhoids are swellings containing enlarged blood vessels inside or around the rectum and anus. Xyloproct also relieves itching, cracking, or tearing of the anus and the inflammation of the rectum and anus (back passage). The active ingredients in Xyloproct are Lidocaine and Hydrocortisone Acetate. Lidocaine belongs to a class of drugs called local anesthetics. It works by blocking pain signals to the brain, resulting in a total stop of pain or partial loss of feeling. Hydrocortisone acetate belongs to a class of medications also known as corticosteroids. It works by activating natural substances in the skin to reduce swelling, redness, and itching.

Manufacturer Information

We currently offer the brand Xyloproct from the United Kingdom manufactured by AstraZeneca in the strength of 5%/0.275%/20 gm and 5%/0.275%/30 gm ointment. The generic Lidocaine/Hydrocortisone Acetate is not available.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Xyloproct. The most common side effects of Xyloproct may include the following:
• Bleeding from the back passage;
• Redness or itching where the ointment contacts the skin;
• Soreness in the back passage

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Shortness of breath;
• Sudden onset of itching, hives, or rash on skin;
• Swelling of face, lips, or tongue;
• Wheezing

These are not all of the side effects of Xyloproct. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.

You should not use Xyloproct if you are allergic to Lidocaine, Hydrocortisone acetate, or any ingredient in Xyloproct. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant;
• Are using medicines for an uneven heartbeat;
• Have a family history of porphyria, a rare disease of blood pigment;
• Have allergic reactions to other corticosteroid medicines;
• Have allergic reactions to other local anesthetics;
• Have an untreated infection in the area where you will apply the ointment

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Xyloproct and other medicines, especially other local anesthetics and those used to treat uneven heartbeats, like sotalol or amiodarone. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Your doctor will determine if using Xyloproct ointment in pregnancy is safe. It is not known if Xyloproct is excreted in breast milk. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Use Xyloproct precisely as prescribed by your doctor. You should feel the effects within a few minutes of applying the ointment. Always wash your hand before and after using this drug. You should put the ointment on the affected area several times a day. Your doctor will tell you how much ointment to use and how often to use it. Xyloproct ointment comes with an applicator. Your doctor will tell you if you need to use the applicator. Be careful not to put too much ointment in your anus or treated areas. Xyloproct ointment is for short-term use. Do not use it for more than 7 days unless your doctor tells you to. It will be easier to apply the ointment if you take it out of the refrigerator about an hour before you use it. Inform your doctor if your hemorrhoid is getting worse or bleeding through the anus. Keep Xyloproct ointment out of sight and reach of children. Store in a refrigerator between 20C – 80C. Do not freeze.
