Xolair (Omalizumab) is a prescription injectable medication used for the treatment of severe persistent asthma in patients 6 years of age or older. This medication is used by patients whose asthma symptoms cannot be controlled by other asthma medications such as the inhaled corticosteroids. Omalizumab belongs to the class of medications called monoclonal antibodies. It works by blocking the action of a certain natural substance in the body that causes the symptoms of allergic asthma and hives. Xolair should be used regularly to be effective. It does not work right away. You should use a quick-relief inhaler if you have an asthma attack such as Albuterol and Combivent. Xolair is injected under your skin by a doctor usually every 2 to 4 weeks for the treatment of asthma and every 4 weeks for the treatment of CIU.
