Vantin (Cefpodoxime) is a prescription medication used to treat several bacterial infections. Left untreated, bacterial infections can trigger an exaggerated immune response called sepsis. This condition can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Vantin treats bacterial infections in the sinus, throat, ear, skin, bladder, or lungs. The drug may also be used to treat gonorrhea. The active ingredient in Vantin is Cefpodoxime. Cefpodoxime belongs to a class of medications called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Vantin is used to treat only bacterial infections. The drug will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when not needed increases the risk of developing an infection resistant to antibiotics.

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:

These are not all of the side effects of Vantin. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.

• Are allergic to any type of penicillin;

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is unknown if Vantin will harm a fetus. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Vantin passes into breast milk in low concentrations and may affect a nursing infant. Take Vantin precisely as prescribed by your doctor. Take the tablet by mouth every 12 hours for 5 to 14 days. Take this drug with food at around the same time every day. Continue to take Vantin until you finish your medicine, even if you feel better. If you stop taking this drug too soon or miss doses, your infection may not be completely treated, and the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics. Keep this medicine in its original container out of sight and reach of children. Store in a dry place at room temperature.
