Vagisil is an over-the-counter medication used to relieve uneasiness due to minor itching and skin irritation outside the vagina. Irritants, stress, menopause, skin conditions, yeast infections, and bacterial vaginosis are common causes of vaginal itching. Vagisil can also be applied around the anus. This drug also relieves vaginal dryness, especially in older women. The active ingredient in Vagisil is 2% Lidocaine. Lidocaine belongs to a class of medications called local anesthetics. It works by causing a temporary loss of feeling on the skin surface to stop irritation, itching, and the urge to scratch.
