Theodur (Theophylline) is used to treat lung diseases such as asthma and COPD. Theophylline belongs to the class of drugs known as xanthines. It works in the airways by relaxing muscles in the lungs and chest, opening the breathing passages and decreasing the lungs response to irritants. Theodur must be used regularly to be effective. It is not a quick-relief inhaler and it should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems. Theodur is prescribed by vets to manage congestive heart failure, asthmatic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in cats and dogs. This medication is used to open air passages in the lungs by relaxing the muscles in the lungs and chest.

In a study on Theophylline by PJ Barnes (American Journal of respiratory and critical care -2013). He found that Theophylline may be useful in reversing corticosteroid resistance in patients with COPD.
