Symmetrel (Amantadine) is a prescription medication used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a brain condition that causes problems with movement, mental health, sleep, and pain. The symptoms of this disease include tremors, difficulty speaking, and painful muscle contractions. Symmetrel is also used to treat or prevent influenza A in adults and children. The active ingredient in Symmetrel is Amantadine. Amantadine belongs to a class of drugs called adamantanes. It works by increasing the amount of dopamine in the body to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The drug works against the influenza A virus by stopping the spread of the virus in the body.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Symmetrel. The most common side effects of Symmetrel may include the following:
• Dizziness;
• Dry mouth;
• Headache;
• Insomnia;
• Nausea
Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Aggression;
• Convulsions;
• Painful or difficult urination;
• Shortness of breath even with mild exertion

You should not use Symmetrel if you are allergic to Amantadine or any ingredient in Symmetrel. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:

• Have eczema;

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Symmetrel and other medicines, like loratadine, alka-seltzer, Flexeril, tramadol, etc. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known whether Symmetrel will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Amantadine passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Do not breastfeed while using this medicine. Use this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes. Symmetrel is a capsule. Swallow the capsule whole with water. If you are taking the syrup, measure the audience using the dosing syringe provided. If you use this drug to treat influenza A, take the medicine within 24 to 48 hours after flu symptoms begin. Do not stop using this medication without talking to your doctor. Your condition may become worse if you stop using the drug. Amantadine can cause serious side effects that may impair your vision and thinking. Do not drive or do anything that requires alertness until you can see clearly. Avoid getting up fast from a sitting or lying position. Avoid drinking alcohol when using this drug. Alcohol can increase side effects. Store at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
