Simparica (Sarolaner) is a prescription medication used to kill adult fleas. The drug is also used for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis) and to treat and control tick infestations caused by Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick), Amblyomma maculatum (Gulf Coast tick), Dermacentorvariabilis (American dog tick), Ixodes scapularis (black-legged tick), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick), and Haemaphysalis longicornis (Asian long-horned tick). The drug is used for one month in dogs 6 months of age or older and weighing 2.8 lbs or greater. Simparica is also used to prevent Borrelia burgdorferi infections that result from killing lxodes scapularis vector ticks. The active ingredient in Simparica is Sarolaner. Sarolaner belongs to a class of drugs called isoxazoline ectoparasiticides. It works by paralyzing and killing the parasites.

We currently offer the brand Simparica from Canada manufactured by Zoetis in the strength of 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg, and 120 mg chewable tablets. The generic Sarolaner is not available.

Get medical help immediately if your dog has any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Simparica. The most common side effects of Simparica may include the following:
• Appetite loss;
• Diarrhea;
• Lethargy;
• Vomiting

Contact your veterinarian right away if your dog has any of the severe side effects, including:
• Signs of neurological adverse reactions, including tremors, ataxia, and seizures;

It is unknown if Simparica passes into breast milk or if it may harm a lactating dog or nursing puppy. Administer this medicine exactly as your veterinarian prescribes. Simparica is a chewable tablet. You can offer it to your dog by hand, in food, or like other tablet medications. Ensure your dog takes the complete dose. Observe for a few minutes to ensure no part of the dose is lost or refused. Administer this drug monthly. To prevent and treat flea infestation, you may begin treatment with Simparica at any time of the year. In areas where fleas are common year-round, monthly treatment with Simparica can continue the entire year without interruption. Treat all animals within the household with an approved flea control product to minimize the likelihood of flea reinfestation. To treat and prevent ticks, administration of Simparica can begin at any time of the year. This drug is not for use in humans. Wash your hands after handling the product. Do not use Simparica in cats. This drug should only be used in dogs older than 6 months old. Store this drug at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
