Silvadene (Silver Sulfadiazene) is used to help prevent and treat wound infections in patients with serious burns. Silvadene is used for serious infection on areas of the skin with second or third degree burns. Silver Sulfadiazene belongs to a class of drugs known as sulfa antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria that may infect an open wound; this can decrease the risk of bacteria spreading to surrounding skin, or blood where it can cause a serious infection.

Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to this medication. The common side effects of Silvadene may include pain, burning, or itching of the skin
Contact your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur:
• Confusion, fever or weakness;
• Dark colored urine;
• Easy bruising or bleeding;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Pale or yellowed skin;
• Severe skin reaction;
• Sudden weakness or ill feeling

Before taking Silvadene, tell your doctor if you have any allergies, or are allergic to other sulfa antibiotics. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
• A genetic enzyme deficiency;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Low white blood cell count
Tell your doctor about all the medications you use including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Silvadene and other medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medication must not be used on premature babies or on newborns during the first two months of life because there is a risk of serious side effects.
