Safe Plus (Carbonyl iron for children) is an over-the-counter medication used to prevent and treat iron deficiency and anemia in children. Untreated iron deficiency in children can affect growth and development. Symptoms of iron deficiency include pale skin, being fussy, fatigue, swollen tongue, and fast heartbeat. The active ingredient in Safe Plus is Carbonyl iron. Carbonyl iron belongs to a class of drugs called iron products. It works by providing the body with iron to help the body produce red blood cells that carry oxygen through the blood to the tissues and organs.

Get medical help immediately if your child has any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Safe Plus. The most common side effects of Safe Plus may include the following:
• Constipation;
• Dark-colored stools;
• Diarrhea;
• Nausea;
• Stomach pain;
• Tooth discoloration;
• Vomiting

Contact your doctor right away if your child has any of the severe side effects, including:
• Breathing difficulties;
• Hives;
• Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat

These are not all of the side effects of Safe Plus. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.

Your child should not take Safe Plus if allergic to Carbonyl iron or any ingredient in Safe Plus. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your child’s medical history, especially if they:
• Have anemia that is not caused by iron deficiency;
• Have hemochromatosis;
• Have hemolytic anemia;
• Have lactose intolerance or a milk allergy;
• Have stomach ulcer;
• Have ulcerative colitis

Tell your doctor about all your child’s medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Safe Plus and antacids, tetracycline, doxycycline, cimetidine, famotidine, etc. Use Safe Plus precisely as prescribed by your doctor. Give your child one ampule one to two times a day with food. Administer this medicine a few hours before or after taking other medications. Safe Plus comes in single-dose ampules for easy administration and reduced risk of iron poisoning. Pull firmly and twist the top in one direction to separate the ampules when giving your child the drug. Place the dose directly into the mouth towards the back of the tongue to avoid staining the teeth. Safe Plus can be taken for a long period. Your doctor will determine the duration of treatment depending on your child’s condition. Avoid dairy products. Dairy products can negatively affect the absorption of Carbonyl iron. Take water or juice to enhance acceptance of the drug. Safe Plus has a great-tasting cherry flavor to enhance acceptance. Store at room temperature, away from sunlight. Iron can oxidize when exposed to sunlight. Keep the drug out of sight and reach of children.
