Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) is a man-made form of active vitamin D. Vitamin D helps control parathyroid hormones and the levels of certain minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus, that are needed for building and keeping strong bones. Rocaltrol is used in patients with kidney disease who can’t make enough vitamin D, as the kidneys need to change vitamin D into its active form before it can be used by the body. Rocaltrol is also used to prevent and treat certain types of calcium/phosphorous/parathyroid problems that can happen with long term kidney dialysis or hypoparathyroidism. Rocaltrol works for these conditions due to the fact that it can enter the body already in its active form, meaning it does not need proper kidney function to be useful in the body.

Manufacturer Information

Rocaltrol is manufactured by Roche Pharmaceuticals in Canada. It is available in dosages of 0.25 mcg and 0.5 mcg. The generic alternative, Calcitrol, is available in dosages of 0.25 mcg, 0.5 mcg and 1 mcg/ml by different manufacturers in New Zealand and Canada.

Rocatrol does not typically cause side effects. Tell your doctor right away if you experience any unlikely but serious side effects occur, such as loss of appetite, back, bone, joint, or muscle pain, constipation, dry mouth, changes in vision, headache, irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, stomach pain, signs of kidney problems, weakness, or increased thirst. This is not a complete list of possible side effects and others may occur. If you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.

You should not use Rocaltrol if you are allergic to Calcitriol, if you have high calcium levels or too much vitamin D in the body, or if you are breastfeeding. To make sure Rocaltrol is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had heart disease, kidney disease, or kidney stones. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant to discuss any possible risks.
