Riomet oral solution (Metformin) is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes affects the body’s ability to produce insulin, increasing blood sugar. Riomet oral solution is an oral diabetes medication that controls high blood sugar to prevent kidney damage, nerve problems, blindness, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. The drug is used with diet and exercise to control type 2 diabetes. The active ingredient in Riomet oral solution is Metformin. Metformin belongs to a class of drugs called biguanides. It works by restoring the body’s response to insulin and decreasing the amount of sugar the liver produces and the body absorbs.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while taking the Riomet oral solution. The most common side effects of Riomet oral solution may include the following:
• Diarrhea;
• Metallic taste in the mouth;
• Nausea;
• Upset stomach;
• Vomiting

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects including:
• Breathing difficulties;
• Feeling cold;
• Feeling dizzy, light-headed, or tired;
• Irregular heart rate;
• Low blood sugar, including blurred vision, shaking, sweating, and tingling in hands or feet;
• Unusual muscle pain

These are not all of the side effects of Metformin. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.

You should not take Riomet oral solution if you are allergic to Metformin or any ingredient in Riomet oral solution. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctors about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant;
• Have diabetic ketoacidosis;
• Have heart disease;
• Have high ketone levels in your blood or urine;
• Have liver disease;
• Have severe kidney disease

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Riomet oral solution and other medicines, including propranolol, timolol, thiazides, phenytoin, calcium channel blockers, and isoniazid. Do not give the drug to children younger than 10. Tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Diabetes in pregnancy may result in birth complications for both the mother and child. Follow your doctor’s instructions for using Riomet oral solution during pregnancy. Metformin passes into breast milk in small amounts. Do not breastfeed during the treatment. Take Riomet oral solution exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Stress, exercise, skipping meals, and alcohol affect blood sugar levels. Take Metformin with food. Metformin on its own does not cause hypoglycemia. If you use Metformin with other diabetes medicines, you may experience low blood sugar and feel very hungry, dizzy, and irritable. Eat or drink a fast-acting source of sugar like fruit juice, hard candy, or non-diet soda. Show your family and friends how to administer glucagon injections in an emergency. Your doctor may prescribe the injection kit if you have severe hypoglycemia. Store Riomet oral solution at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
