Provera (Medroxyprogesterone) belongs to a class of medications called progestins (a form of progesterone), a female hormone that helps to regulate ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary) and menstrual periods. It is also used to treat conditions such as absent or irregular menstrual periods, or abnormal uterine bleeding. Provera is also used to decrease the risk of endometrial hyperplasia (a condition that may lead to uterine cancer) while taking estrogens. Provera is also used to prevent overgrowth in the lining of the uterus in postmenopausal women who are receiving estrogen hormone replacement therapy. Provera is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring female sex hormone, progesterone, and works by mimicking what happens during a normal ovulatory cycle.

Manufacturer Information

Canadian Pharmacy King currently offers the brand Provera from Canada, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand by Pfizer. The generic Medroxyprogesterone comes from Canada by a different manufacturer. The brand Provera and generic Medroxyprogesterone is available in the dosages of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 100 mg tablets. We also carry the brand Provera in the strength of 200 mg and 400 mg tablets.

Common side effects of Provera may include spotting or breakthrough bleeding, changes in menstrual periods, vaginal itching or discharge, breast tenderness, headache, dizziness, bruising or swelling of your veins, sleep problems, itching, rash, acne, hair growth, loss of scalp hair, stomach discomfort, bloating, nausea, weight gain, or vision changes. Contact your doctor if you notice more serious side effects such as:

• A breast lump;

• A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;

• Fever;

• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);

• Signs of a blood clot in your leg (pain, swelling, warmth, or redness in one or both legs);

• Signs of a blood clot in your lung (chest pain, sudden cough, wheezing, rapid breathing, coughing up blood);

• Signs of a heart attack (cheat pain or pressure, pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, nausea, sweating);

• Signs of a stroke (sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), sudden severe headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance);

• Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet;

• Vaginal bleeding if you have already gone through menopause

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. If you notice any serious side effects not on this list, or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.

You should not use Provera if you are allergic to medroxyprogesterone, or if you have abnormal vaginal bleeding that has not been diagnosed, a hormone-related cancer such as breast or uterine cancer, liver disease, or a history of stroke or blood clot. To make sure Provera is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had heart disease, congestive heart failure, recent stroke or heart attack, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or triglycerides, low levels of calcium in your blood, severe pelvic pain, recent marriage or abortion, epilepsy, asthma, migraine headaches, a thyroid disorder, kidney disease, diabetes, or lupus. Do not take this medication if you are pregnant, as it can cause complications in the unborn baby. Tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while using this medication. Provera can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding to discuss any possible risks.

Provera will not prevent heart disease, breast cancer, or dementia, and may increase the risk of developing these conditions in post-menopausal women. This medication may also increase the risk of uterine or ovarian cancer in some women. Long-term treatment with estrogens and progestins may also increase your risk of heart attack, blood clot, or stroke. Avoid smoking while you are taking Provera, as smoking can greatly increase your risk of blood clots. This medication is not approved for use by anyone under the age of 18. Provera may interact with several medications, especially acitretin, brigatinib, darunavir, idelalisib, ivacaftor, lesinurad, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir, telithromycin, and voriconazole. This is not a complete list of interactions, and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are currently taking or have recently taken in order to reduce the risk of any possible interactions.
