Prostigmin (Neostigmine) is a prescription medication used to treat symptoms of myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis is a chronic, autoimmune, neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles. This drug is also used to treat urinary retention after surgery and when the normal movements of the intestine are absent. The active ingredient in Prostigmin is Neostigmine. Neostigmine belongs to a class of drugs called cholinesterase inhibitors. It works by slowing the breakdown of acetylcholine when it is released from nerve endings. By stopping the enzyme from working, Neostigmine can increase muscle strength.
