Proin (Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. Proin will not effectively treat dogs with incontinence due to neurologic disease or malformations. The medicine is also used as an extra-label to treat urinary incontinence in cats. Off- or extra-label use means a medication can be used in a way or in a particular species not specified on the medication label. Only a veterinarian with direct and personal knowledge of your pet should prescribe this medicine. This medicine is prescribed off- or extra-label if there are no other appropriate medications for a particular pet's circumstances. The active ingredient in Proin is Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride. Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride belongs to a class of drugs called sympathomimetic amines. It works by stimulating the smooth muscles of the urethra, bladder neck, and urethral sphincter to increase tone and closing the neck of the bladder.
