Preparation H is an over-the-counter medication used to temporarily relieve swelling, burning, pain, and itching caused by hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum, which can be internal or external and are often caused by increased pressure in the area. Straining during bowel movements, prolonged sitting, obesity, pregnancy, constipation, and heavy lifting can all contribute to increased pressure in the anal area, leading to hemorrhoids. The active ingredient in Preparation H is phenylephrine. Phenylephrine belongs to a class of drugs known as sympathomimetic amines. It works by temporarily narrowing the blood vessels in the anal area, decreasing swelling and discomfort.

Use this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes. Preparation H comes in different forms, including wipes, suppositories, gel, cream, and ointment. Do not take it by mouth. For the wipes, gently pat or wipe the affected area. Use after each bowel movement or as needed. You can use Preparation H wipes in place of regular toilet paper. The wipes are flushable, but only flush one wipe at a time, and never if you have a non-standard plumbing system. For the suppositories, wash your hands thoroughly. Remove the suppository from its wrapping. You may lubricate the tip of the suppository with a small amount of petroleum jelly or other lubricant. Lie on your side with your knees bent or squat. Gently insert the suppository pointed end first into the rectum. Remain lying down for a few minutes to allow the suppository to dissolve. For the gel, cream, or ointment, apply a thin layer to the affected area up to four times daily, especially at night, in the morning, or after each bowel movement. You can use the cream or ointment for internal hemorrhoids. Use the applicator provided. Attach the applicator to the tube, lubricate it, and gently insert it into the rectum. Squeeze the tube to dispense the cream or ointment. Clean the applicator after each use to prevent bacterial contamination. Wash your hands before and after applying any Preparation H product. If symptoms persist within 7 days or worsen, consult your doctor. Store this drug at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
