Periactin (Cyproheptadine) is a prescription medication used to treat allergy symptoms like hives, itching eyes or nose, sneezing, watery eyes, and runny nose. It may sometimes be used to treat anxiety or insomnia. It may also be used to increase appetite in people who don’t eat enough or to prevent cluster or migraine headaches. Cyproheptadine belongs to the class of medications called antihistamines. It works by blocking the action of histamine, the substance in the body that causes allergic reactions. Periactin is taken by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually two to three times a day.

The common side effects of Periactin may include blurred vision, constipation, dry mouth, nose or throat, dizziness and drowsiness.
Inform your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Difficulty urinating;
• Fast or irregular heartbeat;
• Mental or mood changes;
• Shaking tremor;
• Seizures

You should not take Periactin if you are allergic to Cyproheptadine or if you have any other allergies. Avoid alcoholic beverages. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding. There may be a drug interaction between Periactin and other medications such as lorazepam, zolpiderm, cyclobenzaprine and cetirizine, etc.
