Oxtellar XR (Oxcarbazepine Extended Release) is used either alone or in combination with other medications to treat partial seizures. This medication is only for use in adults and children who are at least six years old. Oxtellar XR belongs to a class of medications called anticonvulsants and works by decreasing the nerve impulses in the brain that can cause seizures and pain.

Common side effects Of Oxtellar XR may include dizziness, drowsiness, balance or coordination problems, nausea, vomiting, tremors or shaking, double vision, or rash. Oxtellar XR can reduce the sodium in your body to dangerously low levels, which can cause a life threatening electrolyte imbalance. Call your doctor right away if you have nausea, lack of energy, confusion, feeling tired or irritable, severe weakness, muscle pain, or increased seizures. Report any new or worsening mood symptoms to your doctor, such as mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, or if you feel agitated, hostile, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

You should not take Oxtellar XR if you are allergic to oxcarbazepine or eslicarbazepine. To make sure this medication is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had liver disease, kidney disease, or if you have mood problems or suicidal thoughts. Some people have thoughts about suicide while taking Oxtellar XR. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms. Do not stop or start taking Oxtellar XR during pregnancy without your doctor's advice. Having a seizure during pregnancy could harm both the mother and the baby. Talk to your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking this medication for seizures, in order to discuss the risks. If you are pregnant, your name may be listed on a pregnancy registry to track the effects of Oxtellar XR on the baby. Oxtellar XR may make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non hormonal birth control (condom, diaphragm with spermicide) to prevent pregnancy. You should not breastfeed while you are taking Oxtellar XR, as the medication may pass into breast milk and can harm a nursing baby. Do not give this medication to a child without medical advice.

Do not drink alcohol while taking Oxtellar XR. Drinking alcohol may increase certain side effects, and may increase the risk of seizures. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise, in hot weather, or by not drinking enough fluids. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquid you should drink. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how Oxtellar XR will affect you. Your reactions may be impaired. Oxtellar XR may interact with several medications, especially opioid medications, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, or medication for anxiety or seizures. This is not a complete list of interactions, and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are currently taking or have recently taken in order to reduce the risk of any possible interactions.
