Nuvaring (Etonogestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol) is used as a contraception to prevent pregnancy. Nuvaring contains ethinyl estradiol and etonogestrel. Both estradiol and etonogestrel are female hormones that prevent ovulation. Nuvaring also causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, which makes it harder for the sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Nuvaring is inserted into the vagina for 3 weeks at a time, then removed for 1-week, during which time a menstrual period usually occurs.
