Nexium 24HR Capsule (Esomeprazole Magnesium Trihydrate) is an over the counter (OTC) medication used to treat frequent heartburn in adults over the age of 18 years old. The active ingredient in Nexium 24 HR is Esomeprazole 20 mg. The Nexium 24 HR refers to the dosage which is one pill every 24 hours. Nexium 24 HR is taken once in the morning for 14 consecutive days and it may take one to four days for full effect. Nexium 24 HR belongs to the group of medications called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). It works by turning the acid pumps from on to off, reducing the amount of acid that rises into your esophagus and alleviating heartburn.

Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects:
• Abdominal or stomach pain or cramping;
• Blood or mucus in your stool;
• Diarrhea that doesn't stop;
• Fever;
• Signs of lupus;
• Symptoms of low levels of magnesium in the blood
