NexGard (Afoxolaner) is a prescription medication used to kill adult fleas. The drug is used to treat and prevent flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis). NexGard is also used to treat and control Ixodes scapularis (black-legged tick), Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick), and Haemaphysalis longicornis (longhorned tick) infestations. NexGard is also used to prevent Borrelia burgdorferi infections that may result from killing Ixodes scapularis vector ticks. This drug is used for one month in dogs and puppies at least 8 weeks old and weighing at least 4 lbs. The active ingredient in NexGard is Afoxolaner. Afoxolaner belongs to a class of drugs called isoxazoline insecticides. It works by paralyzing and killing parasites.

We currently offer the brand NexGard from Canada manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim in the strength of 11.3 mg, 28.3 mg, 68 mg, and 136 mg chewable tablets. The generic version is not available.

Get medical help immediately if your dog has any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using NexGard. The most common side effects of NexGard may include the following:
• Appetite loss;
• Diarrhea;
• Hyperactivity;
• Lethargy;
• Vomiting

Contact your veterinarian right away if your dog has any of the severe side effects, including:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as facial swelling, hives, scratching, vomiting, shock, seizures

These are not all of the side effects of NexGard. Always contact your veterinarian if you notice any unusual symptoms.

You should not give your dog NexGard if it is allergic to Afoxolaner or any ingredient in NexGard. Before you start administering this medication, tell your veterinarian about your dog’s medical history, especially if it:
• Has a history of seizures;
• Is lactating;
• Is pregnant or breeding

Tell your veterinarian about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between the NexGard and other medicines. Tell your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant or breeding. It is unknown if NexGard will harm a pregnant or breeding dog. Discuss the benefits and risks of administering this drug to a pregnant or breeding dog with your veterinarian. Inform your veterinarian if your dog is lactating. It is unknown if NexGard passes into breast milk or if it may harm a lactating dog or nursing puppy. Administer this medicine exactly as your veterinarian prescribes. Give your dog this medicine orally once a month. You can administer this medicine with or without food. Ensure your dog takes the complete dose. Monitor your pet for a few minutes after administering the medication to ensure no part of the dose is lost or refused. If you suspect any dose has been lost or if your dog vomits within 2 hours of taking the medicine. Administer another full dose if this happens. To prevent flea infestation, administer NexGard Spectra just before fleas become active. Treat all animals within the household with an approved flea control product to minimize the likelihood of flea reinfestation. To treat and prevent ticks, administration of NexGard Spectra should coincide with the time of the year ticks are active. This drug is not for use in humans. Inform your doctor in case of accidental ingestion. Store this drug at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
