Namenda XR (Memantine Hydrochloride, or Memantine HCI) is an extended-release capsule used for the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease. It is a once-a-day medication that can be used alone or in combination with an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (AChEI). Memantine HCI works by blocking excess activity of a substance in the brain called glutamate, which may reduce the symptoms associated with Alzheimer disease. It is not a cure for Alzheimer disease.

The common side effects of Namenda XR include:
• Constipation;
• Diarrhea;
• Dizziness;
• Headache;
• Tiredness
If you have had any severe side effects such as any allergic reactions (hives, itching, rash, difficult breathing), chest pain, confusion, fainting, lack of coordination, seizures, please inform your doctor immediately.
Do not take Namenda XR if you are allergic to Memantine or any active ingredient in this medication. Talk to your doctor about all your past medical histories, including:
• Difficult urination
• Kidney, liver, or bladder problems
• Seizure disorder
