Namenda (Memantine) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of dementia linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Memantine belongs to the class of drugs called NMDA receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of glutamate in the brain that contributes to the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. This medication does not cure Alzheimer’s disease but it may improve memory, awareness and the ability to perform daily functions.

The brand Namenda is available from United Kingdom and Turkey also called Ebixa manufactured by Lundbeck. The generic Memantine Hydrochloride comes from Canada by PMS and India also called Admenta manufactured by Sun Pharma. Namenda is available in the strength of 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg tablets.

The common side effects may include body aches, constipation, dizziness and headache. Many people taking this medication do not have any serious side effects.

A very serious allergic reaction to this medication is rare. Get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as:

• Itching or swelling;
• Rash;
• Severe dizziness;
• Trouble breathing

You should not take Namenda if you are allergic to Memantine or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. This medication may make you dizzy. You should not drive, use machinery or do any activity that requires you to be alert. Limit alcoholic beverages. Namenda should only be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk.
