Monovisc (Sodium Hyaluronate) is a single-injection viscosupplement used for the treatment of pain in osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. It is manufactured from ultra-pure hyaluronic acid, which is a component of the synovial fluid of a healthy knee. Hyaluronate works by acting as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joint, helping the patient move the knee smoothly with less pain. Monovisc is usually used in patients who have not responded to other treatments such as acetaminophen, exercise or physical therapy. Monovisc is injected by the doctor into the affected joint usually once a week. Other alternative treatment also includes Synvisc and Orthovisc.

In a clinical trial (Single intra-articular injection of lightly cross-linked hyaluronic acid reduces knee pain in symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 2019), SC Petterson, KD Plancher, the results of this study support “use of a single injection of hyaluronic acid (Monovisc) for patients with symptomatic knee OA in patients older than 45 years, as a safe and effective alternative for patients who may want an alternative treatment modality or may not be candidates for partial or total knee replacement.”
