Metamucil is an over-the-counter medication used to relieve constipation and regularize bowel movements. When you pass less than three bowel movements a week or have difficult bowel movements, you are constipated. Regular bowel movements are a key indicator of a healthy digestive system, effectively eliminating waste and toxins from the body. Metamucil can also help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. The medication also serves as a convenient way to increase dietary fiber intake, especially for those who struggle to get enough fiber from their diet alone. Metamucil also helps promote healthy blood sugar levels. The active ingredient in Metamucil is Psyllium husk. Psyllium husk belongs to a class of drugs called bulk-forming laxatives. It absorbs water in the intestines, increasing stool bulk and promoting bowel movements. It also serves as a dietary fiber supplement, providing a source of soluble and insoluble fiber.
