Lupron Depot (Leuprolide Acetate) is a prescription medication used to treat prostate cancer, breast cancer, endometriosis, early puberty, and uterine fibroids. It is given by injection into a muscle or under the skin. Lupron Depot contains Leuprolide acetate which is chemically similar to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH or LHRH). These are the hormones that occur naturally in the body and they are released in small amounts which leads to events stimulating the production of sex hormones. However, when Lupron Depot is injected, the normal events that lead to sex hormone production are interrupted and testosterone is no longer produced by the testes. Decreased levels of testosterone lead to decreased symptoms associated with prostate cancer. It is important to note that this medication is for palliative care and is not a cure for the disease. It is also used in women to treat symptoms of endometriosis (overgrowth of uterine lining outside of the uterus) or uterine fibroids.
This medication can be used to treat Central Precocious Puberty (CPP) in pediatric patients. In a study (Long-term effectiveness of depot gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue in the treatment of children with central precocious puberty, June 1993) - R D Clemons, find that "Treatment of central precocious puberty in children using Lupron Depot is safe and efficacious.
Lupron Depot may be prescribed by vets for ferret's with adrenal disease. There are three kinds of Lupron Depot your ferret might be prescribed: one month, three months and 4 months. Studies have shown that once-a-month product works best.
