Levaquin (Levofloxacin) is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections such as infections of the skin, sinuses, kidneys, bladder and prostate. Levofloxacin belongs to the class of medications called quinolones. This medication may also be used to treat bacterial infections that cause bronchitis or pneumonia.

We currently have the brand from Canada manufactured by Janssen-Ortho and the brand from Turkey manufactured by Sanofi Aventis. The generic comes from India. Levaquin is available in the strengths of 250 mg, 500mg, and 750mg tablets. Other alternatives names include Tavanic (by Tavanic) or Levoflox (by Cipla).
Common side effects include:
• Abnormal vision;
• Difficulty sleeping;
• Dizziness, drowsiness;
• Headache and heartburn;
• Increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight;
• Mild diarrhea;
• Nausea or vomiting;
• Vaginal pain and discharge
Do not use Levaquin if you are allergic to levofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones. You may not be able to use Levaquin if you have a muscle disorder. Before you start taking the medication, inform your doctor about your medical condition and about all the other medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. There may be an interaction between levofloxacin and other medications such as amiodarone, antidiabetes medications, anti-inflammatories, caffeine, theophylline, warfarin, zinc supplements, etc.
