Lamotrigine may cause severe life-threatening skin rash, especially in children and in people who take too high of a dose at the start of a treatment with this medication. The extended-release form of Lamotrigine (Lamictal XR) is for use only in adults and children who are at least 13 years old. Do not stop taking Lamictal without talking to your doctor, even if you feel fine because you may have increased seizures in you stop using the medication suddenly. It is unknown whether Lamictal will harm unborn baby. Taking this medication during early pregnancy can increase the risk of the baby being born with cleft lip or cleft palate. This medication can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Drinking alcohol may increase your side effects from Lamictal or make symptoms of bipolar disorder worse, but drinking isn't prohibited. There may be an interaction between lamotrigine and other medications such as aripiprazole, birth control pills, gabapentin, metformin, olanzapine, phenytoin, rifampin, risperidone, ritonavir, topiramate, zonisamide, etc.
