Kombiglyze XR (Saxagliptin/Metformin) is a prescription combination medication that is used to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. This medication is combined with a proper diet and exercise program. Proper control of diabetes helps to prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs and sexual function problems. It may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Saxagliptin belong to a class of medications called DPP-4 inhibitors and Metformin belongs to the class of medications called biguanides. Saxagliptin works by increasing the levels of incretins, which help control blood sugar by increasing the release of insulin after a meal and decreasing the amount of sugar made by the liver. Metformin works by lowering blood sugar by helping to restore your body’s proper response to the insulin and decreasing the amount of sugar made by your liver and absorbed by your stomach or intestines.
