Keppra XR (Levetiracetam Extended Release) is a prescription medication used to treat partial onset seizures in adults and children at least 4 years old. Partial onset seizures originate from a single location in the brain. Tingling in the arms and legs, a general strange feeling that is hard to describe, and unusual smells or tastes are common signs of a simple partial seizure. The drug is also used to treat tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children at least 6 years old, and myoclonic seizures in adults and children at least 12 years old. The active ingredient in Keppra is Levetiracetam. Levetiracetam belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excessive neuronal discharge in the brain.
