Iressa is used to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that has spread to other parts of the body and that have certain types of abnormal epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) genes, and who have not had previous cancer treatment. This medication may sometimes be used to treat cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. Gefitinib belongs to the class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the function of the EGFR protein that is found on the surface of many cancer cells as well as normal cells.

Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to this medication. The common side effects of Iressa may include acne, diarrhea, dry mouth, dry skin, fatigue, increased liver enzymes, itching or skin rash, trouble sleeping, and weakness.

Contact your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur:
• Blurred vision, eyes being more sensitive to light;
• Eye pain or redness, watery eyes;
• Liver problems;
• New or worsening cough with fever;
• Severe or ongoing diarrhea;
• Severe skin reaction;
• Signs of stomach bleeding;
• Sudden chest pain or discomfort, trouble breathing

You should not use Iressa if you are allergic to Gefitinib. Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctors about your medical history and if you take a blood thinner or if you have:
• Breathing problems, lung disease other than lung cancer;

• Vision problems

Avoid taking an antacid or stomach acid reducer within 6 to 12 hours before or after you take Iressa because these medications can make Gefitinib less effective when taken at the same time. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Iressa and other medications. Iressa may affect fertility in women. Tell your doctor if you plan to become pregnant. Do not use Iressa if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
