Ilube Eye Drops (Acetylcysteine)

Ilube Eye Drops (Acetylcysteine) are a medication used to treat conditions where not enough tears are made to keep the eye lubricated and clean. They act as artificial tears, and ease eye dryness and soreness associated with many different dry eye conditions. Ilube eye drops contain two active ingredients, acetylcysteine and Hypromellose, which are both known as eye lubricants. Acetylcysteine is a derivative of the naturally occurring amino acid L-cysteine. It works by breaking down any thick and sticky mucus on the surface of the eye. This allows tear fluid to move more easily across the surface of the eye. Hypromellose is a synthetic polymer that forms a film on the surface of the eye (cornea). It produces a transparent, lubricating and moistening film on the surface of the eye. Both these ingredients work together to provide soothing relief from dry eyes that are a result of your eyes not producing enough tears, or abnormal mucus production.

Side effects of Ilube Eye Drops are very rare. If you experience any persistent discomfort, increased reddening, or irritation, stop using the eye drops and contact your doctor, as you may have an allergy to the preservative, or an eye infection. If you notice any severe side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.

You should not use Ilube Eye Drops if you are allergic to acetylcysteine or Hypromellose. As well, you should not use soft contact lenses while using Ilube Eye Drops, as the eye drops contain a preservative that can be absorbed by soft contact lenses, causing eye irritation. Ilube Eye Drops are not expected to harm an unborn baby or breastfeeding child. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding to discuss any possible risks. This medication may cause your vision to blur temporarily after you have put the drops into your eyes. Do not drive or operate machinery until this has worn off.

This medication is approved for use in children. Always consult your doctor before giving a child medication. If you are using more than one type of eye drop, you should administer them at least five minutes apart to prevent the second drop washing away the first. Use eye gels or ointments last. Ilube Eye Drops are not reported to have any interactions with other medications. Regardless, tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are currently taking or have recently taken in order to reduce the risk of any possible interactions.
