Iberogast is a combination of 9 medicinal plant extracts: bitter candytuft, angelica root, chamomile flowers, caraway fruits, milk thistle fruits, lemon balm leaves, peppermint leaves, greater celandine, and liquorice root. These medicinal plant extracts work together to relieve symptoms of gastrointestinal disturbances associated with functional dyspepsia, a sensory and motility problem of the digestive tract, where sensation and peristalsis are disturbed, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, gas, constipation, and diarrhea. The 9 medicinal plant extracts in Iberogast work together to facilitate a number of digestive improvements, including regulation of peristalsis by relieving or preventing intestinal spasms and by toning the smooth muscles within the digestive tract, reducing acid production through its positive affects on the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines, improving digestive secretions through its interactions with the bitter receptors in the taste buds on the tongue, which stimulate digestive secretions, and inducing gas release from the stomach. Iberogast also provides mild pain relief by numbing certain areas within the digestive tract, as many patients with functional gastrointestinal (GI) issues often have an increased sensitivity to pain. It also has an antibacterial effect, by inhibiting the growth of six subspecies of Heliobacter Pylori, a bacteria that frequently infects the stomach.
