Heptral (Ademetionine) is a prescription medication used to treat intrahepatic cholestasis in pregnant women. Cholestasis is a liver problem that occurs when the flow of bile from the liver is reduced or blocked. Heptral is also used in combination with other medicines to treat medical conditions, including depression, cystic fibrosis, and osteoarthritis. The drug also improves symptoms in people with fibromyalgia. It treats nerve problems in people with AIDS or sexual dysfunction in men with depression. The active ingredient in Heptral is Ademetionine. Ademetionine belongs to a class of drugs called nutritional supplements. Ademetionine is a naturally occurring substance in cells, tissues, and body fluids. It works by ensuring sufficient levels of glutathione in the liver are maintained to minimize liver damage. It also affects serotonin levels to regulate mood and treat depression.
