Glucovance (Glyburide/metformin) is a prescription medication for controlling high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin to regulate the sugar level in the body. Inactivity, obesity, and a family history of the disease are risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Glucovance can be used alone or with other medications. The active ingredient in Glucovance is Glyburide and Metformin. Glyburide belongs to a class of drugs called sulfonylureas. It works by causing the pancreas to release more insulin into the bloodstream. Metformin belongs to a class of drugs called biguanides. It works by controlling the amount of sugar in the blood. It also decreases the amount of glucose the body absorbs from food and the amount of glucose the liver produces.

Glucovance passes into breast milk in small amounts. Do not breastfeed while using the medication. Use the drug exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take Glucovance with meals. Drink plenty of liquids while using this drug. If you experience low blood sugar symptoms like dizziness, irritability, and confusion, take a fast-acting sugar source like fruit juice, raisins, or non-diet soda. You may also experience signs of high blood sugar, like increased thirst and urination. Stress, illness, exercise, and skipping meals can affect blood sugar levels. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, except it is almost time for your next dose. Do not use more than your prescribed dose. Avoid drinking alcohol when using Glucovance. It lowers your blood sugar and increases your risk of lactic acidosis. If you use colesevelam, avoid taking it within 4 hours after taking Glucovance. Store at temperatures up to 250C.
