Fampyra (Fampridine) is used for the improvement of walking in adult patients with a walking disability related to multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a condition in which inflammation destroys the protective sheath around the nerves causing a wide range of symptoms, including problems with leg movement, and balance. Fampyra belongs to a class of drugs called potassium channel blockers. It works by acting on damaged nerves, where it prevents charged potassium particles from leaving the nerve cells that have been damaged by MS. This action lets signals pass down the nerve more normally helping some people to walk better.
