Estrace is a form of estrogen, and in a group of drugs called female sex hormones. Estrace (Estradiol) is used to treat symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and vaginal changes. It is also used to prevent osteoporosis (bone loss) in menopausal women with ovarian failure. It can sometimes be used in part of a cancer treatment in both men and women. It works by increasing the level of estrogen in the body. The usual recommended start dose is 0.5 mg tablets or 0.01%/42.5gm vaginal cream.

The brand Estrace is manufactured by Activis from the United States and Acerus Pharmaceuticals from Canada. The generic Estradiol is currently from Canada manufactured by Lupin. Estrace is available in a 0.01%/42.5 gm vaginal cream and 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg tablets.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking Estradiol.

• Difficulty breathing;
• Hives;
• Swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat

Stop taking Estrace and call your doctor at once if you have one of these serious side effects:

• Heart attack symptoms;
• Signs of stroke;
• Signs of blood clots;
• Swelling or tenderness in your stomach;
• Jaundice;
• Memory problems, confusion, unusual behavior;
• Unusual vaginal bleeding or pelvic pain;
• Lump in your breast

Less serious side effects of Estradiol may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, mood changes, insomnia, cold symptoms, weight gain, headache, back pain, breast pain, thinning scalp, vaginal itching or discharge, changes in menstrual periods, or breakthrough bleeding.

Estrace should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Talk to your doctor about your medical history to be sure you can safely take Estrace. You should not use this medication if you have any unusual vaginal bleeding that hasn’t been checked by a doctor, liver disease, history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot, an increased risk of blood clots or heart problems, or a history of hormone-related cancer. This medication can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack. It may also increase your risk of cancer of the breast, uterus, or ovaries. Do not use this medication if you are pregnant or nursing and be sure to tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Estrace can slow down breastmilk production. There may be some drugs that interact with this medication. If you are taking any of these medications, speak to your doctor.
