Elmiron is in a group of drugs called anticoagulants (blood thinners). Elmiron (Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium) is used to prevent the formation of blood clots and treat bladder pain and discomfort caused by cystitis (bladder inflammation or irritation). It works by thinning the blood. The usual recommended start dose is the 100 mg tablet.

It may come from other international countries. Elmiron is available in tablets of 100 mg strength, and varying quantities.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium.

• Difficulty breathing;
• Hives;
• Swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat

Stop taking Elmiron and call your doctor at once if you have one of these serious side effects:

• Nosebleed;
• Blood in your urine or stools;
• Rectal bleeding;
• Coughing up blood;
• Bleeding gums;
• Feeling like you might pass out

Less serious side effects of Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium may include hair loss, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, mild dizziness, depression, or mild itching/rash.

Elmiron can be taken on an empty stomach—at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. To be sure this medication is helping, you may be asked to visit your doctor to check your progress every 3 months for regular blood tests. Talk to your doctor about your medical history to be sure you can safely take Elmiron. This medication is not expected to harm an unborn baby. It isn’t known whether or not Elmiron passes into breast milk or harms a nursing baby. It is best to talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this medication if you are pregnant or nursing. There may be an interaction between Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium and other medications such as NSAIDs, ReoPro, Activase, Agrylin, Acova, Angiomax, Pleta, Plavix, and more. If you are taking any of these medications, speak to your doctor.
