Diamox (Acetazolamide) is used for the treatment of glaucoma and to treat and to prevent acute mountain sickness. It may also be used as part of a treatment plan for congestive heart failure and seizure disorders. Acetazolamide is a “water pill” diuretic. It decreases the amount of fluid that can build up in the eye. This medication is usually used for a short period. It works less well over time. Diamox may be taken with or without food.

The common side effects may include blurred vision, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, lightheadedness, loss of appetite, tiredness. The serious side effects may include:
• Increased body hair;
• Loss of hearing;
• Persistent nausea or vomiting;
• Ringing in the ears;
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain

You should not take Diamox if you are allergic to Acetazolamide or if you have any other allergies. Before you starting using this medication, talk to your doctor about about your medical conditions and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy or cause blurred vision. Do not drive or do any activity that requires you to be alert. Limit alcoholic beverages. Diamox can cause your blood sugar levels to fall. Check your blood sugar levels regularly. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. This medication does pass into breast milk but is not likely to harm a nursing infant.
