Cytotec (Misoprostol) is a synthetic prostaglandin that is used to prevent stomach ulcers while you take NSAIDs. It helps to decrease the risk of serious complications from ulcers such as bleeding. This medication protects your stomach lining by lowering the amount of acid that comes in contact with it. Misoprostol is also used in combination with mifepristone for abortion. In case of an abortion, this medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the embryo, embryonic sac and lining of the uterus, expelling the developing baby. This process usually takes 24 -48 hours and is accompanied by heavy bleeding and strong uterine cramping.
