Cotellic (Cobimetinib fumarate) is a prescription medication used alone to treat adults with blood cancers called histiocytic neoplasms. Histiocytic neoplasms are a group of rare disorders where a type of white blood cell, also known as histiocytes, builds up in specific tissues and organs. Cotellic is used in combination with Zelboraf (vemurafenib) to treat a particular type of metastatic melanoma (skin cancer) that has spread to other parts of the body and cannot be removed by surgery in adults. Metastatic melanoma is cancer in pigmented cells. The disease occurs when cancerous cells from a primary tumor get loose and spread through the lymph or blood circulation to start a new tumor. The active ingredient in Cotellic is Cobimetinib fumarate. Cobimetinib fumarate belongs to a class of drugs called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking tyrosine kinases, a chemical messenger that sends growth signals in cells.

There may be drug interactions between Cotellic and other medicines, including amiodarone, cobicistat, diltiazem, enzalutamide, and grapefruit juice. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Cotellic may harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while taking this drug and for at least 2 weeks after your last dose. Cotellic may affect fertility in men and women. It may be hard to get pregnant while using this drug. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if this drug is excreted in breast milk. Do not breastfeed while using Cobimetinib fumarate and for at least 2 weeks after your last dose. This medication may cause drowsiness and vision changes. Do not drive or use machines that require you to be alert. Use Cobimetinib fumarate precisely as prescribed by your doctor. Cotellic is often given in a 28-day treatment cycle. You may only need to use this drug for the first 21 days of each cycle. Your doctor will determine how long to treat you with Cotellic. You may take this drug with or without food. If you vomit shortly after taking Cotellic, do not take another dose. Continue with your normal dosing schedule. You will need frequent medical tests while taking this drug. Check your skin regularly. Tell your doctor if you notice new skin changes like redness, a new wart, or sores that will not heal. Avoid sunlight during treatment with Cotellic. The drug may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when you go outside. Keep your medicine out of sight and reach of children.
