Colestid (Colestipol) is a prescription medication used to treat high cholesterol. Colestid belongs to a class of medications called Bile Acid Sequestrants, and lowers “bad” cholesterol in your blood, also called LDL (low-density lipoproteins) cholesterol. It does this by binding with bile acids in the intestines, which forms a complex that can then be removed through excretion. This increased output of bile acids leads to an increase of receptors in your liver that can reduce LDL cholesterol levels, which in turn lowers the overall level of the bad cholesterol. Lowering your LDL cholesterol may reduce your risk of heart disease and arteriosclerosis (hardened arteries), which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and circulation problems.

Colestid can also make it harder for your body to absorb certain vitamins that are important if you are nursing a baby. Do not take Colestid without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding. Some forms of this medication may contain Phenylalanine. Talk to your doctor before using this medication if you have phenylketonuria.
