Cartia XT (Diltiazem CD) is an Extended-Release tablet used to treat hypertension, chest pain and certain heart rhythm disorders. Diltiazem CD belongs to the group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. This medication works by relaxing blood vessels in the body and heart so blood can flow more easily. It also lowers the heart rate. This helps the heart work less hard and lowers blood pressure. You may be able to prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems by lowering high blood pressure. If Diltiazem is used regularly, it can decrease the number and severity of episodes of chest pain from angina. It may also help increase your ability to exercise.

Our Canadian Pharmacy currently offers the generic Cartia XT from Canada. The brand name Cartia XT is not available at this time. Cartia XT is available in the strength of 120 mg, 180 mg, 240 mg and 300 mg tablets.

The common side effects may include constipation, dizziness, flushing, headache, lightheadedness, nausea and weakness.

Talk to your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:

• Dark urine;
• Fainting;
• Irregular heartbeat;
• Mental or mood changes;
• New or worsening symptoms of heart failure;
• Persistent nausea or vomiting;
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain;
• Swelling ankles or feet;
• Unusual dreams;
• Usual or sudden weight gain;
• Unusual tiredness;
• Yellowing eyes or skin

You should not take Cartia XT if you are allergic to Diltiazem CD or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. This medication may make you dizzy. Alcohol and marijuana can make you dizzier. You should not drive, use machinery or do any activity that requires you to be alert. Limit alcoholic beverages. Inform your doctor if you are using marijuana. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. This medication passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding. There may be an interaction between Diltiazem CD and other medications such as Digoxin and fingolimod.
