Calan SR (Verapamil SR) is a medication used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain, and certain heart rhythm disorders. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Verapamil SR belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing the muscles of the heart and blood vessels so blood can flow better.

Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to this medication. The common side effects of Calan SR may include abnormal liver function tests, constipation, dizziness, and headache.
Contact your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur:
• A light-headed feeling, like you might faint;
• Chest pain, slow or fast heart rate;
• Liver problems;
• Lung problems;
• Shortness of breath

You should not take Calan SR if you are allergic to Verapamil SR or if you have a serious heart condition such as:

Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

If you take disopyramide, avoid taking it within 48 hours before or 24 hours after you take Calan SR. Grapefruit products may interact with Calan SR and lead to potentially dangerous effects. Drinking alcohol with this medication can increase certain side effects. Calan SR may cause blurred vision, or make you dizzy or may impair your reactions. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medication will affect you. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Calan SR and other medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant. You should not breast-feed while you are taking this medication.
