Artane (Trihexyphenidyl) is used to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease such as stiffness, tremors, spasms, and poor muscle control. It is also used to treat and prevent certain muscular conditions due to the side effects of certain psychiatric drugs such as chlorpromazine, fluphenazine, and perphenazine. Artane belongs to a class of drugs known as antimuscarinics. It works by relaxing muscles and nerve impulses that control muscle function.

Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to this medication. Continue to take Artane and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following less serious side effects such as:
• Anxiety or nervousness;
• Constipation or difficulty urinating;
• Decreased sweating;
• Drowsiness or dizziness;
• Dryness of the mouth;
• Large pupils or blurred vision;
• Upset stomach

Stop taking Artane and contact your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur:
• A rash;
• Agitation, anxiety, confusion, hallucinations;
• Eye pain;
• Fast or irregular heartbeats;
• Fever;
• Loss of consciousness, hyperactivity;
• Seizures

You should not use Artane if you are allergic to it or if you have an obstruction in the bowel or bowel disease, myasthenia gravis, or narrow-angle glaucoma. Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctors about your medical history and if you have ever had:
• Any psychiatric illness or depression;
• Difficulty urinating or enlargement of the prostate;
• Enlargement of the prostate or difficulty urinating;
• Epilepsy or another seizure disorder;
• Heart disease or irregular heartbeat;
• Kidney or liver disease

Avoid drinking alcohol with this medication; it can increase drowsiness or dizziness. Artane may cause blurred vision, or make you dizzy or may impair your reactions. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medication will affect you. Artane may cause decreased sweating, avoid becoming overheated. Try to keep as cool as possible and watch for signs of heat stroke such as decreased sweating, nausea, and dizziness. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Artane and other medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Children and adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug.
