Aredia (Pamidronate) is a prescription medication used to treat high blood calcium levels, bone problems that can occur with some types of cancer such as breast cancer or bone marrow cancer; however Aredia does not treat the cancer itself. This medication can also be used to treat Paget’s disease which is a disease that causes abnormal and weak bones. Pamidronate injection belongs to a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates. It works by slowing bone breakdown, increasing bone density and decreasing the amount of calcium released from the bones into the blood.

We currently offer the brand Aredia from the United Kingdom manufactured by Novartis. The generic Pamidronate Disodium injection comes from India also called Bonapam by Alkem Lab and from Canada by a different manufacturer.

Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to this medication.

The common side effects of Aredia may include bone pain, fever, headache, increased blood pressure, low calcium or phosphate levels, and pain, redness, swelling or a hard lump under your skin around the IV needle.

Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects:
• A seizure;
• High fever;
• Kidney problems;
• Low calcium levels;
• Low potassium;
• New or unusual pain in your hip or thigh

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to mannitol, or to any bisphosphonate. Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctors about your medical history if you have ever had:
• A dental problem;
• An electrolyte imbalance;
• Kidney or liver disease

This medication can harm your kidneys; this effect is increased when you take certain medications such as antivirals, chemotherapy, antibiotics, medications for bowel disorders, medications for organ transplant rejection, injectable osteoporosis medications, some pain and arthritis medications, etc. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Aredia and other medications. Aredia may harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are taking this medication and inform your doctor if you become pregnant. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Aredia is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years of age.
