Angiomax (Bivalirudin) is a prescription medication used to prevent blood clots in people with severe chest pain or other conditions who are undergoing an angioplasty. Angioplasty is a procedure used to open blocked arteries. Blocked arteries are the buildup of fibrous and fatty material inside the arteries. They are the underlying condition that causes coronary artery disease. The active ingredient in Angiomax is Bivalirudin. Bivalirudin belongs to a class of drugs called a direct thrombin inhibitor or anticoagulant. It works by preventing the formation of blood clots.
