Amphojel is an over-the-counter medication used to treat excessive stomach acid, like heartburn, upset stomach, sour stomach, or acid indigestion. Obesity, smoking, stress and anxiety, pregnancy, and certain food and drinks are causes of too much stomach acid. Amphojel is also used to reduce phosphate levels in people with certain kidney conditions. The active ingredient in Amphojel is Aluminum hydroxide. Aluminum hydroxide belongs to a class of drugs called antacids. It works by lowering the acid in the stomach. Amphojel only works on the existing liquid in the stomach. It does not prevent acid production. This drug may be used alone or with other medications that lower acid production.
