Aldactone (Spironolactone) is used to treat heart failure, high blood pressure or hypokalemia. It is also used to treat fluid retention in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or a kidney disorder. Spironolactone belongs to the class of medications known as potassium-sparing diuretics. This medication works by blocking the actions of the hormone aldosterone in the body. Aldosterone is produced by adrenal glands and acts in the kidneys, where it controls the balance of salt and water in the body and keeps the potassium levels from getting too low. Take this medication as directed by your doctor.
