Aerius (Desloratadine)

Aerius (Desloratadine) is a prescription medication that relieves allergic rhinitis, chronic idiopathic urticaria, running nose, tearing eyes, sneezing, hives, and itching. The active ingredient in Aerius is Desloratadine. Desloratadine belongs to the class of medication called an antihistamine. Desloratadine is an H2 receptor blocker and prevents the release of histamine that the body makes during an allergy reaction. As a result, it works by blocking the receptors to which histamine typically attaches itself. When the receptors are blocked, histamine cannot have its effect, decreasing allergy symptoms.

Get medical help immediately if you have signs of an allergic reaction while taking Aerius. The most common side effects of Aerius may include:
• Diarrhea;
• Dry mouth;
• Headache;
• Muscle pain;
• Nausea and vomiting;
• Stomach pain;
• Tiredness

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Allergic reactions including rash, itching and difficulty with breathing;
• Severe stomach pain;
• Sore throat;
• Worsening of your allergic reactions

Before taking Desloratadine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, loratadine, or have any other allergies. Aerius comes in oral syrup and a tablet, usually taken once daily. You should use your medication according to your prescription label. Do not use the two different forms (syrup and tablet) together. Instead, you should take Aerius orally with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. If you use the rapidly dissolving tablet, allow the tablet to dissolve on the tongue and then swallow, with or without water. And if you are using oral syrup, carefully measure the dose using a special spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose. Inform your doctor if your symptoms persist or worsen for over seven days.

Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant;
• Have breathing problems such as asthma;
• Have diabetes mellitus;
• Have kidney problems or difficulty with urination;
• Have liver diseases

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Aerius and other medicines, including gabapentin, diazepam, ivacaftor, tucatinib, etc. Keep your medicine in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children.
